This house had baseboard heaters for heating  and window air conditioners for cooling. Heating and cooling of the house has always been a challenge. When the family decided to get rid of windows air conditioners, their choice fell on ductless heat pump - Mr Slim from Mitsubishi.

Running a ductwork in the house and installing a central air system was not practical. So ductless choice was easy. The next important decision was to install a ductless heat pump rather than a plain air conditioner. Here are the reasons:

A heat pump costs only a couple of hundred dollars more than an air conditioner.

A heat pump is a great energy saver. It's 300% efficient compared to baseboard heaters.

It can be used all year around while an air conditioner is used only a couple of month a year at the most.

A heat pump is virtually the same as an air conditioner. It's look, dimensions, installation and maintenance are virtually the same.

The next step was to choose the right unit. The choice fell on a two zone Mr Slim from Mitsubishi model MXZ-2A20NA. One outdoor unit provides heat and cool for two indoor units - in this case upstairs and in the basement.

Find a place to install the unit was not easy. There was no room for the unit between the houses to install on a side wall. The front was out of the question. The back had a small spot between the windows on the second floor Also in case of any future upgrades to the exterior of the house, the unit on the wall would be a major obstacle.

After all it was decided to install the heat pump under the deck. The owner was supposed to remove lattice from the side to provide easier outside air access to the heat pump. Well, the lattice is still there, but the heat pump easily handles 30°C days of summer.

The installation inside is nothing unusual. The indoor unit blows cold air laterally into the two bedrooms - to the left and to the right -  and keeps them comfortable. The most of the cold air flows down stairs to the main floor and further down into the basement. The amount of the cold air created by one head of the heat pump is sufficient to keep the entire house (all the three levels) comfortable.

The second head of the heat pump was installed in the basement. The main purpose of the second head is to keep the bedroom  and the office in the basement worm at winter time.

All the installation was done in one day. No alterations inside was required. The owners did not have to stay home and spent their entire day at work.

As you could see, ductless heat pumps Mr Slim from Mitsubishi allow to bring full comfort to a house that would be "hopeless" just a couple of years ago.
