Gas Furnace Choices
We carry several models of gas furnaces. They differ in:
- Thermal efficiency - AFUE
- Type of the blower motor
- Type of heating cycle - 1-stage or 2-stage
♦ Basic gas furnace - GKS9 model. Has 1-stage of heat, 92% efficiency and multi speed AC blower motor. It is a good quality solid product supported by good warranties. If all you need is high efficiency, then this furnace will serve you well.
♦ GMH95 This furnace differs from GKS9 in higher 96% efficiency, 2-stage heating and better warranty. It allows the furnace to heat the rooms of the house more evenly and efficiently.
♦ GME95 This model of gas furnace has 2-stage heating, 96% thermal efficiency. It differs from GMH95 in energy efficient multi-speed ECM blower motor.
♦ GMVC95. They too have 96% thermal efficiency and 2-stage heating. The main difference is variable speed ECM motor. It is also called DC motor.
Those who get a high efficiency furnace with variable speed (DC, ECM) motor love their furnaces for top efficiency, even heat throughout the house and quite operations. The secret is in the motor. It is so efficient and quiet that you can keep the furnace fan running all the time.
$250 OPA rebate is still available. To get this rebate the heating contractor must be an HRAC member.

Air Conditioner Choices
There are 2 types of air conditioners mostly installed these days. They differ in efficiency (SEER rating) and design features. The compressor warranty provided by manufacturer is also different.
♦ 13 SEER Air Conditioner - GSX13 models use R-410A refrigerant. The heart of it
is a compressor - quiet, efficient and reliable. A solid coil guard protects the
unit from damage. Comes with 10 years parts warranty.
Watch out when getting quotes on 13 SEER air conditioners. Still, there are plenty of noisy units with reciprocating compressors and old R-22 refrigerant on the market.
♦ Up to 15 SEER Air Conditioner - SSX14 model. Even more quiet and efficient than GSX13 units. When installed on a furnace with ECM (DC, variable speed) motor it becomes a 15 SEER unit. Comes with Lifetime Compressor Warranty.
Extended Warranty
Q: I am getting the furnace and the air conditioner installed by a small HVAC contractor. Can I rely on a small heating and air conditioning contractors to provide 10 years parts and labour warranties? What if they go out of business?
A: Every furnace sold we sold to our customers came with 10-year Extended Factory Parts and Labour warranty directly from the manufacturer. With that, if the furnace ever needs repairs, the manufacturer provides us with parts and pays us the labour cost.
The most important thing to remember about Extended Warranty by Contractors:
♦ Extended Warranty should be prepaid to the manufacturer at the time of sale. That’s what we do.
♦ You should be provided a separate Extended Warranty Certificate from the manufacturer ON YOUR NAME. That’s how we do.
♦ If all you get is only warranty mention in the sales invoice, it is only a promise of Warranty. And always check the fine print on the invoice regarding warranties.

A high efficiency 15 SEER air conditioner will get you $400, and a furnace with DC (aka variable speed/ ECM) motor will get you another $250 from OPA.
Variable speed motor boosts air conditioner efficiency. So, usually a 15 SEER air conditioner is a 14 SEER unit installed in combination with a furnace equipped with DC motor. More on Rebates.
