A high efficiency air conditioner gets up to $1,300 of rebates. It makes its cost cheaper than an entry lever unit.
A tankless water heater gets around $1,300 in rebates.
Due to rebates, furnaces installed today by heating contractors are mostly high efficiency gas furnaces with ECM (DC, variable speed) motor like Goodman furnace GMV95.

Forced air high efficiency gas furnaces can be divided into three main groups:
♦ Basic gas furnace. Sometimes it's called a builder's furnace. This furnace has one stage of heat and multi speed blower motor. Basic gas furnaces from American Standard and Goodman are good quality solid products. They have efficiency 92%. You get $850 of rebates for these furnaces when installed by a qualified heating contractor. If all you need is high efficiency, then this furnace will serve you well.
♦ A step above basic gas furnace. These gas furnaces have two stage heating. It allows the furnace to heat the rooms of the house more evenly. This forced air furnace also gets $850 in Rebates when installed by qualified heating contractors.
♦ Top of the line furnaces. They too have two or more stages of heating, but the main difference is variable speed blower motor. It is also called DC motor or ECM motor.
Those who get a high efficiency furnace with variable speed (DC, ECM) motor love their furnaces for top efficiency, even heat throughout the house and quite operations. The secret is in the motor. It is so efficient and quiet that you can keep the furnace fan running all the time.
Due to $1,705 in rebates, gas furnaces with the ECM motor from American Standard and Goodman, are by far more popular than any other type. To get this rebate the heating contractor must be an HRAC member.

Q: I am getting the furnace and the air conditioner installed by a small HVAC contractor. Can I rely on small heating and air conditioning contractors to provide extended parts and labour warranties? What if they go out of business?
A: An honest small HVAC contractors will buy for you Factory Parts and Labour extended warranty directly from the OEM. You can get any qualified contractor for repairs and the OEM will pay for the the cost of the service.
The most important thing to remember about Extended Warranty by Contractors:
♦ Extended Warranty should be prepaid to an underwriter (ideally OEM) at the time of sale.
♦ You should be provided a separate Extended Warranty Certificate from the underwriter. If all you get is only warranty mention in the invoice, it is only a promise of Warranty.

Lately, talking to homeowners we hear about NATE Certified HVAC Technicians offering their services. NATE stands for nothing less than North American Technical Excellence.
Level of skills and training required for NATE certification is nowhere close to what is legally required from the trades here in Ontario. Every attempt to use NATE certification as a credential should raise a big red flag.
