Gas Furnace Choices
Forced air high efficiency gas furnaces can be divided into three main groups:
♦ Basic gas furnace. Sometimes it's called a builder's furnace. This furnace has one stage of heat and multi speed blower motor. Basic gas furnaces from American Standard and Goodman are good quality solid products. They have efficiency 92%. If all you need is high efficiency, then this furnace will serve you well.
♦ A step above basic gas furnace. These gas furnaces have two stage heating. It allows the furnace to heat the rooms of the house more evenly.
♦ Top of the line gas furnace. They too have two or more stages of heating, but the main difference is variable speed blower motor. It is also called DC motor or ECM motor.
Those who get a high efficiency furnace with variable speed (DC, ECM) motor love their furnaces for top efficiency, even heat throughout the house and quite operations. The secret is in the motor. It is so efficient and quiet that you can keep the furnace fan running all the time.
This type of furnaces gets $125 rebate from OPA. To get this rebate the heating contractor must be an HRAC member.

Extended Warranty
Q: I am getting the furnace and the air conditioner installed by a small HVAC contractor. Can I rely on a small heating and air conditioning contractors to provide 10 years parts and labour warranties? What if they go out of business?
A: A small HVAC contractors can buy for you Extended Factory Parts and Labour warranty directly from the OEM. With that you can get any qualified contractor to do repairs. The manufacturer will provide parts and pay the labour cost to the contractor.
The most important thing to remember about Extended Warranty by Contractors:
♦ Extended Warranty should be prepaid to an underwriter (ideally OEM) at the time of sale.
♦ You should be provided a separate Extended Warranty Certificate from the underwriter. If all you get is only warranty mention in the invoice, it is only a promise of Warranty. And always check the fine print on the invoice.
