NATE Certified Technician
"North American" Technical Excellence is Below Canadian 101 Level
NATE - North American Tecnical Excellence has arrived to Canada. You might have come across one of the NATE Certified HVAC Technicians. Buyer Beware.
Here in Ontario we take Gas license in steps starting from Gas Fitter 3, through Gas Fitter 2 and finally after years in the field and exams arriving to Gas Fitter 1. Word "excellence" is not mentioned anywhere.
Getting an air conditioning mechanic license again requires spending years as an apprentice and going through the exams. Still, no excellence. Just hard work.
So, what does it take to get a Certificate of North American Excellence? The answer is at NATE's web site www.natex.org. Apparently not much. See two snapshots below.
It's OK if a salesman mentions that he is a NATE Certified Technician. Selling does not require trade licenses. It's a completely different story if an installer or a serviceman claims NATE license in lieu of provincial licenses. It would be illegal in Ontario.
