Requirements To HVAC Contractors
Know Who Is Looking After Your Heating and Cooling
Choosing an HVAC contractor is not an easy task. Fortunately, records on heating and air conditioning contractors is available on-line. You can remove some of the bad companies off the list without even making a phone call. There are a few signs that will tell you a quality HVAC contractor from a "fly-by-night" company.
A good place to start checking on your contractor is public forums. A couple of them to mention are HomeStars and RedFlagDeals. You might be glad you've spent a few minutes on those boards searching on the company name and the web site address.
You are not the first one checking on your contractor. Organizations like HRAC, TSSA and BBB file information on the contractors. Of them, only registration with TSSA is mandatory.
♦ Expect your heating and air conditioning contractor / company to be a member of HRAC - Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Contractors of Canada. You can check company's membership at the bottom of the linked page.
Membership, though it is not mandatory, indicates a few very important things - the company has all the licenses and qualifications to operate an air conditioning and gas heating business. Also, member companies pay sizable dues. This is another thing separating a serious contractor from a fly-by-night one.
OPA (Ontario Power Authority) provides Rebates only for the installation done by HRAC members.
♦ All the gas heating contractors / companies must be registered with TSSA - Technical Standards and Safety Authority.
♦ Always check BBB record on the contractor. Membership in BBB is not mandatory, but every reputable company is a BBB member. BBB checks companies for all the applicable licenses, registrations and insurances. Avoid HVAC contractor if it's not a member of Better Business Bureau. By the way, BBB registers complains on all the companies, not on the members only. BBB is a good place to start checking your contractors. Here is our record with Better Business Bureau.
♦ Heating contractor's insurance. If the company is an HRAC member in good standing, it has already submitted a copy of it's insurance to HRAC. BBB also checks members' licenses and registrations. Your chances are better if your contractor is a member of the both.
♦ Your gas heating contractor / installer must be a valid holder of gas fitter license G1 or G2. An air conditioning contractors / installers must carry air conditioning license 313A or 313D.
♦ An air conditioning contractor must have current ODP Certificate (Ozone Depletion). Our every installer going to an air conditioner installation has ODP Lisense.
♦ Established HVAC contractors are usually dealers for a couple of name brands. By the way, our company is an Authorized HVAC Dealer for Goodman and Mitsubishi.
