Air conditioning maintenance is not difficult to do for a DIY person. If the air conditioner no longer provides enough cooling, try cleaning it first before calling for service to an air conditioning contractor. Most of the time dust is the only reason your air conditioner is nor performing.
One place to check is the furnace filter. The other place to clean is condensing coil - the outdoor part of the air conditioner. In basic air conditioner models the condensing coil is unprotected and exposed.

What to Clean in a Central Air Conditioner
You can easily see dirt as on the closeup of a dirty coil below. This dirt is a mix of dry dust and lint. All it needs is a washing with a garden hose.
When checking air conditioners with the coil guard, outside appearance of the unit does not tell much. An air conditioner will remain clean and shiny for years. Only by looking under the guard you can tell if the coil needs maintenance.

Frequency of maintenance depends on the area you live in. In some locations air conditioners run for years without cleaning. In other areas with high amount of lint in the air maintenance needs to be done twice a year.
