A ductless heat pump replaced several noisy and not efficient window air conditioners in this home. It provides all cooling and most of the heating for the house.
A central air system was not an option. The house was already heated by the boiler and radiators. Removal of a perfectly working system, replacing it with a complete central air system followed by a major renovation would run costs into a five digit number. What about weeks if not months spent in

search of contractors, estimates, living in a mess. No, central air was not a good option, but there was a good option instead - ductless air.
The choice fell on a ductless heat pump - it will cool at summer and heat in the winter and costs only a couple of hundred dollars more than a cooling only unit.
The unit was installed on the second floor - where bedrooms are. At summer time the heat pump would be blowing cold air into the bedrooms, and gravity would bring cold air downstairs to the main floor. At winter time the heat pump would be heating sleeping area only. The thermostat controlling radiators is located on the main floor. It can be turned down for the night thus saving on gas.
After testing the heat pump during hot summer days, the owner wrote us in his email - “I am very happy with my new unit. It has done a great job in keeping the entire house comfortable.” All it took was a single zone ductless heat pump - Mr. Slim from Mitsubishi. Not especially big at that - only 15,000 BTU of cooling capacity.

The indoor unit perfectly blends into the house interior - wether it’s day light or electric one.
The outdoor unit also has an attractive design. Refrigerant and electric lines are hidden inside plastic channels. Even the brackets are hiding behind the unit.
