Changes in Air Conditioner Rebate

As of July 15, 2009 EcoENERGY program will now allow consumers to use matched furnaces to increase the SEER and EER rating of the central air conditioning system. This change brings the federal program in line with what has been accepted in the COOL SAVINGS REBATE and should simplify the requirements for those consumers who can claim the federal, provincial, and the OPA rebates.

Basically, NRC (Natural resources Canada) reversed its previous ruling that required air conditioners to have  Energy Star performance out-of-the-box. Now NRC allows to use a combination of the air conditioner and the furnace for rebates purposes.

Furnace with variable speed motor can boost the SEER rating of an air conditioner. For example 14 SEER unit installed with a furnace or a fan-

coil unit with variable speed motor (ECM, DC) can get 14.5 or even 15 SEER rating. Such a boost would bring the homeowner up to $900 in rebates.

All those AC - furnace combinations are verified by third parties, so the rating boosts are real. That's why the change in NRC rules is justified. Also, it will encourage more home owners to replace their old furnaces.

For several month that out-of-the-box rule existed it presented  not justified difficulties for contractors, manufactures and distributors as air conditioning units had to satisfy two different set of rule - Cool Savings Rebate on one side and ecoEnergy on the other side.
