A tankless (instantaneous, on-demand) gas water heater provides unlimited hot water the very instant we need it.
We install tankless water heaters from Rinnai. This is the most tried-and-true brand. There are 30 million Rinnai water heaters installed. More than any other brand.
When switching to a on demand unit, two things are important – to know how to use tankless water heater and to choose the right size.
Water Heater Sizing
Cold water temperature in Toronto goes down to 40°F (4°C) at winter time. If we, for example, want to keep hot water temperature at 110°F, we arrive at 70°F water temperature rise in the water heater.
Manufacturer specs may provide water heater capacity at different temperature rise: 45°F, 65°F, 90°F, etc. You may have to interpolate the data to assess capacity at 70°F temperature rise.
For a ballpark estimate you can use information below:
♦ An energy efficient shower head uses two gallons of water per minute.
♦ Water heater with gas input of 100,000 BTU/h, provides enough hot water for one shower.
♦ If you need to run two showers at the same time, you will need a unit in 180,000 – 200,000 BTU/h range..
